Tennis marathon raises more than $15,000 for coach battling cancer

Tennis coach Mark Blume first picked up a racket when he was 4 years old. Since then, his passion for tennis has taken him across the state, impacting countless lives. The tennis pro and father of three is now a coach at Genesis Health Club. Daniel Bowshier, 12, describes Coach Blume as a kind, hard worker who always pushed him to do his best. “He definitely made me a better player,” Bowshier said. “He's a lot of fun.” Ankeny resident Tera Jordan, who has been taking classes with Blume since 2020, said Blume's encouragement and constant positivity have had a ripple effect across the state. “Mark is always so encouraging. I've exceeded my expectations on the court. He's always the one to say, 'You can do it,'” Jordan said. “I had no idea the lives he touched across the state of Iowa and the Missouri Valley, even across the country… it was so wonderful to hear about his legacy and his impact.” When Blume was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in mid-January, Jordan said the Genesis Health Club community was eager to help him, especially after Blume had spent his life helping others. “I'm grateful that he gave me a critical outlet in a very fast-paced, demanding job. And I'm just grateful for his legacy and his input,” Jordan said. “I'm so glad we could come together to celebrate him as he faces a very difficult test in his life.” From 10:30 a.m. Friday to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, people played tennis in shifts and paid for their time on the court. court.
