RPI women's hockey represented at the 2024 IIHF World Championship
UTICA, NY—The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey program was represented on the international stage this month as two current and one former engineers prepared to face their home countries in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) 2024 Women's World Championship.
The event, which ran from April 3 to 14 in Utica, featured 10 teams divided into two groups of five teams in the preliminary round format. RPI mainstays Andrea Trnková and Nina Christof 2023-2024 competed for the Czech Republic and Germany respectively, while former engineer assistant captain Lilli Friis-Hansen ('22) was a member of the Denmark squad. For the players, the central location of the championship in New York made this event even more memorable.
“It is always an honor to represent your country at any level,” Christof said. “But with this tournament being so close to RPI, it makes it even more special knowing teammates can come support and watch.”
After each helping their respective countries progress through group play, Trnková and Christof were pitted against each other in a quarter-final match in which Trnková's Czech Republic secured a 1–0 win to advance to the semi-finals.
“Representing my country is the greatest, most honorable privilege I can have. I am also grateful to the RPI program for helping me develop along the way,” said Trnková.
Trnková and the Czech Republic fell 4-0 to gold medalist Canada in the semi-finals, before falling short in a 3-2 bronze medal match against Finland.
Friis-Hansen scored an assist while playing in all four of Denmark's matches.
