Morocco shocks Argentina in men's soccer opening match
The men football tournament at the Paris 2024 started with a big surprise with Morocco defeat two-time Olympic champions Argentina 2-1 in Saint-Etienne on Wednesday (July 24).
The opening match was marred by controversy after a fan attack on the pitch interrupted play for almost two hours, but the match eventually resumed behind closed doors.
The match turned in Morocco's favor thanks to a Soufiane Rahimi on either side of the break.
Rahimi scored the first goal just before half-time, but six minutes after the break he doubled the lead with a penalty kick, giving the Atlas Lions an incredible 2-0 lead.
Giuliano Simeone reduced the deficit in the 68th minute, but Argentina looked set for a surprise defeat in their opening match at the Olympics as the match went well into injury time.
Christian Medina appeared to score the equalizer in the 16th minute of added time, after which Moroccan fans took to the field to protest the late goal.
The entire crowd was asked to leave the stadium while both teams remained on the premises. Players eventually returned to the field to finish the match and play three minutes of added time.
Before play resumed, Medina's goal was disallowed by VAR for offside, with Morocooo securing the win.
Argentina, who have just won a record 16 Copa America titles, will take some comfort from their triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign. The South Americans suffered a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening match of that tournament before lifting the World Cup trophy.
