Quinnipiac University is making a donation to repair the tennis courts at Hamden High School
Quinnipiac University recently made a $152,000 donation to Hamden High School to help repair their tennis courts. The city hasn't repaired the courts on Mix Avenue in decades. The donation and a portion of the city's bond money will restore the courts and open them in 2025.
These courts are home to Hamden High School tennis athletes. But due to the circumstances they were not able to use them. The students used the high school fields for practices this past season and were unable to hold games on their high school fields.
Safety concerns are one of the biggest concerns on these courses with multiple cracks and uneven surfaces. Hamden High Schools girls tennis coach Peter Finch has always made the well-being of his athletes a priority. Finch is glad these courts are finally getting the repairs they deserve.
If you were running and weren't looking at your feet as you ran, you could stop sideways and an ankle would develop, Finch said. And it could be a serious injury, so they were pretty bad.
When told about this donation, Hamden High School boys tennis coach Adam Raffone felt like a kid on Christmas morning with how much excitement he felt, especially as a former high school tennis athlete. Raffone hasn't seen these courts fully repaired since he was a student there in the early 2000s.
At first it was excitement and then it was just gratitude, Raffone said. I am so grateful that these children are given a chance.
In an article posted by Quinnipiac Today, Bethany Zemba, Quinnipiac Vice President of Strategy and Community Relations, said these improvements will not only benefit current players, but will also inspire future generations to embrace the sport. Together we build a healthier, more active community.
The rehabilitation of the courts will allow Hamden High School athletes to use them during their season. From 2025, the courts will also be available to the local community.
