The great footballer Terry Tausch dies
AUSTIN, Texas Terry Tausch, a great Texas footballer, died Wednesday night at his home in Plano, Texas. Tausch was a four-year postman (1978-1981) for the Longhorns, won honors from across America in 1980 and 1981 and was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 2001. He was 61 years old.
In Texas, Tausch was a fast and reliable attacking attacker who crowned his collegiate career with the honors of the American consensus in 1981. He was also named All-American Football News as a junior and won All- conference honors. Southwest in each of its last two seasons at UT.
Originally from New Braunfels, Texas, and a promising prospect from New Braunfels High School, Tausch was recruited to Austin by Darrell Royal and played with Fred Akers after being redshirt in 1977. As a straight forward in Texas, one of the teammates with whom he played side by side for four years was former quarterback Lawrence Sampleton.
“Terry and I had a very special relationship,” said Sampleton. “He grew up in New Braunfels, and I grew up in Seguin, and we were archival in high school. He’s a year older than me, but I knew him from college. Terry was a great guy. He was a great guy, but he was a man with a soft voice and really cared for everyone. He was a nice type of leader who worked hard every day and was a great example to all of us young people. “
In its 1981 senior season, the Longhorns posted a 10-1-1 record and finished second in the Associated Press after a 14-12 win over No. 3 Cotton Bowl Alabama . In that year, Texas also won against EMS # 8, Oklahoma # 10, and Miami # 14. In the four years it has written, Texas has scored 35-12-1, including a mark of 9-3 in 1978 and 1979 with a final classification of ninth in 1978 and 12th in 1979.
“I still remember coach (Leon) Manley, who was a really tough offensive line coach, and everyone knew that coach Manley respected Terry so much and just loved him,” added Sampleton. “He would never ride with Terry. He was an amazing player, and he played in the NFL and was an All-American in Texas, but I think the thing I remember most about Terry is his work ethic, the way he treated everyone around him, and his ability to gain respect from coaches, teammates and fans, I saw him in him from the time I was in college until now. He was an amazing person, and I wish the best to his family, as well as to all of his fans and supporters at New Braunfels. “
A defining moment for him came during the 1979 Red River Showdown, where he helped the Longhorns beat Oklahoma # 3, 16-7. On that day, Tausch had seven pins while UT ran the low angle game on him for footage throughout the game as part of 223 yards rushing.
Tausch was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round (39th overall) of the 1982. NFL Draft. He played seven seasons with the Vikings from 1982 to 1988, starting 68 of the 81 games he played. He played his last NFL season with the San Francisco 49ers in 1989, helping the franchise win Super Bowl XXIV.
Tausch and his wife, Ela, have two sons, Nicholas and Eric. The two played college football with Nicholas as a kicker at Notre Dame and Eric as a center at TCU.
