IceHogs fans are hoping for hockey next season
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Like everything else, the IceHogs have been rocking their routine since the pandemic. With no games provisionally scheduled until February 5, 2021, the Hogs found a way to bring the fans back to the BMO.
We know they will come back. Whenever it may be.
Such was the sentiment of fans at the BMO Harris Bank Center during Saturday’s annual Garage Sale; get the chance to do some shopping and catch up with familiar faces.
It’s absolutely wonderful. It shows people haven’t forgotten about them, said James Hicks III, a Hampshire fan. Of course the IceHogs haven’t forgotten their fans either, which is great fun.
It’s just nice to have some kind of normalcy when you want and do something like that, explained Mike Peck, IceHog’s Director of Business Operations. Where we can get people in here, bring them into the arena. There is no ice, but at least there are some IceHogs stuff. Just dealing with people was pretty cool.
Peck said it was strange for him, because he’s usually deep into hockey this time of year.
Our season ticket holders, all of our fans, it was really cool to reconnect and talk to them because we haven’t seen them since March, Peck said.
Even the fans are starting to go crazy without their favorite hockey team.
We honestly miss it, explained Shelby Didricksen, a Hampshire fan. We miss going during the week when they have the weekday evening games or the weekend games where were like oh let’s just hop in the car and get a last minute game and let it go.
Sethadam Hutchinson makes the journey from Joliet. He said he comes to all the Dog Day games. Although he is optimistic for a season, he still has questions.
Even if it does, are we going to do the same thing as the bigger sports teams, Hutchinson wondered. Where are cardboard cutouts and what not in the stands and no real fans? Because I know it will be difficult for me to watch games on TV that are being broadcast.
We were clearly hoping to get fans into the building, but we really have no control over that, Peck said. But look carefully at everything, at every option.
Peck tells 23 News that if there is a season coming in February, it won’t be a shortened season. He would expect it to start the summer.
