Five of Houston’s most popular innovation stories this week

Surgeons hone their medical skills in schools and residents for over a decade, but their education usually does not include human resource development. Still, when it came to putting candidates into the surgical program, the responsibility for hiring rested on the surgeon’s shoulders.
Aimee Gardner, who holds a PhD in Organizational Psychology, saw this inefficiency first-hand.
“I work in a large surgery department in Dallas shortly after graduating from graduate school, how people are selected for residents and fellowship programs, and doctors spend a lot of time reviewing piles and piles of paper applications. I quickly learned how much time I spend, interviewing for hours like hundreds of candidates, “Gardner told the Innovation Map. “I was really shocked by the inefficiencies in terms of business and workforce.”
And things are just getting worse. Many applicants appear every year and are applying for more hospitals and programs. Future surgeons used to apply for about 20 programs, but now they average close to 65. According to her research, Gardner says reviewing these applications takes a lot of time and money, especially up to the interview stage of the process, to fill five spots a year for $ 100,000.
Five years ago, Gardner, as she explains, came up with this application fever and a solution to all the inefficiencies and founded SurgWise Consulting, president and CEO.
“We help people provide ratings that help them sort out the abilities and attributes they care about,” says Gardner. “(They) are really hard to evaluate, but they really distinguish between those who are really successful in their career training and those who aren’t.”

These are non-technical skills such as professionalism, interpersonal skills, and communication. SurgWise started out as a service-oriented consulting firm, but is now ready to leverage technology to extend its solutions. Work began with the Houston Methodist, and SurgWise is still working with the surgery team there. She states that she has accumulated a large amount of data that can be utilized and rationalized.
“We are currently shifting from a very intimate client approach to a more scalable product. Each year we evaluate about 80% of all people applying for future surgeons such as pediatric surgery and vascular surgery. Using the data and experience of the last five years, we have created a more scalable and easier off-the-shelf solution.
Gardner says her solution is important to provide more equity in the hiring process.
One of our goals was to create a more equitable opportunity and platform to evaluate people. Because many of the traditional tools and processes most people use in this area have a lot of prejudices and are likely to put individuals in the underrepresented group at a disadvantage, “she says. .. “For example, testimonials are often very insider status. If you go to the Ivy League, or if your parents are in medical care and you know someone, a networking and socio-economic status perspective. There is that step up from. “
Personal statements and test scores are also unfair. Because if people have money for coaching, they tend to be better submissions.
SurgWise hopes to further streamline the process by reducing the number of programs that future surgeons will apply. She wants to do this through apps and web tools that can match people to the right program.
Our ultimate goal is to create a platform that allows applicants to get more information about the different places they apply for and make more informed decisions. This eliminates the need for applicants to apply in 100 locations, “Gardner said. “We basically want to create a match-style app that fills in the data and tells us,” What I’m looking for here is my career goals and my tastes. ” I am.
While the tool is on the road, Gardner says SurgWise is moving at full speed towards launching a data-driven adoption platform. Bootstrapped companies want to raise early venture funding this summer to hire and grow their team.
I’m going to start looking for Series A funding later this summer as I’m still looking at this app I talked about and some other opportunities to expand into other disciplines.
