Google Camera 8.8 speeds up Pixel 6 night mode

Pixel 6 and 6 Pro’s faster Nightscape mode is rolling out with version 8.8 of Google Camera.

First introduced with the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, Google touts Night Sight photos with “less motion blur as exposure times can be half what they used to be.” The company credits “HDR+ updates with brackets to reduce noise and new ML techniques.”

“And Night Sight can now produce beautiful low-light images that are sharper than before in half the normal exposure time.”

After updating to camera 8.8, when switching to the Night Sight tab, Pixel 6/Pro owners will see a circle in the bottom right corner. Tap to choose between 2 seconds or maximum (up to 6 seconds). Depending on the shooting conditions, the time step may vary between 2-6 seconds.

Google essentially gives you the option to speed up Night Sight or increase exposure time to improve image quality.

This feature was announced as part of this month’s feature removal. Android 13 QPR2 is not yet available for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, and 6a. The March patch also brings “general improvements to camera stability and performance under certain conditions” for Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 7, and 7 Pro. The 7 series also benefits from “improved color accuracy or exposure levels while using the front camera under certain conditions.”

Google Camera 8.8 has not yet been widely rolled out via the Play Store, but is available as a sideload. The app was last updated in his December.
