Jetport travelers can now fly to the moon or parts of it

The planes leaving the Portland Jetport may not be taking passengers to the moon or Mars, but a new exhibit unveiled at the terminal on Tuesday is giving travelers the chance to dream of visiting the moon or Mars. It may make you embrace.

The new exhibit was created by the Bethel-based Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, which will loan the exhibit to the airport terminal for the next five years. This exhibit features rock samples from several celestial bodies that most people can only see in photos or from a distance on a clear night.

Darryl Pitt, head of the museum's meteorite department, said the goal is to get people to think there is more possibility than they imagine.

On Tuesday, museum and airport staff unveiled the new exhibit for the first time. “Fly Me to the Moon and Mars” consists of his 18 different mineral samples, all originally from the solar system's two major asteroids, Mars, or the Moon. It was part of it.

Experts say the sample probably was blown away in space before hitting Earth. They looked like artifacts from outer space, some amorphous with holes like sponges. The written description explained where the object came from and when it was first discovered on Earth.

There were two highlights of the collection on display. One was a moon rock sample whose center diameter was larger than a basketball. This fragment is said to be the second largest lunar rock fragment on Earth. The museum houses the largest at its Bethel location.

Another notable meteorite on display was a chunk of iron ore that was 2 feet tall and weighed about 180 pounds. Its nickname is the Scream because some say the depressions on its surface resemble Edvard Munch's famous distorted face in his 1893 painting The Scream.

Its actual name is Gibeon, taken from the name of a Namibian village near where it was discovered in 1836.

Airport Assistant Director Zachary Sundquist said 2.2 million passengers pass through the terminal each year, making it the perfect audience for the museum's exhibits.

It's unique to Maine, he said.

As visitors viewed the exhibits Tuesday, museum co-founder Lawrence Stifler moved through the crowd, showing off small samples from the museum's collection.

Inside was a small, unassuming rock with a rough texture, fused with particles and debris from a star thought to have exploded more than 7 billion years ago.

Stifler said one of the museum's goals with this exhibit is to help visitors understand how important meteorites are.

We've learned more about the formation of Earth and the solar system from meteorites, and if people could see them here, it might spark a little bit of curiosity, he said.

R. Irene Yingst, a mission scientist with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, said the exhibit will make distant objects in the night sky appear more realistic.

She said exhibits like this allow people to kind of get up close and personal with objects that are visible in the sky, like the moon and Mars, as well as things from outer space.
