Google is bringing AI-powered Circle to Search to older smartphones – here's why it matters

Google has announced that Circle to Search will be rolling out to older and midrange Pixel devices starting March 27th. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that AI capabilities will be coming to “more Pixel and Samsung phones, flip phones, and tablets.”

Circle to Search started with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Google Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8, and gradually made its way to the older Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro with March's Pixel Feature Drop.

Google will soon start adding Circle to Search to the entry-level Google Pixel 7a, which will carry over to the Google Pixel 8a, and also to older models such as the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and the lower-priced Pixel 6a. It will be added. Google Pixel Fold and Google Pixel Tablet will also receive Circle to Search “in the coming weeks.”

Some older Samsung devices will also receive Circle to Search starting this week through an update to One UI 6.1. As reported by Android Central, this includes last year's Galaxy S23 series. Both Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, as well as the Galaxy Tab S9 series of tablets, will also receive Circle to Search.

Older smartphones from the Pixel 5 line onwards are unlikely to have this feature, as OS support for these models has ended.

To use Search in Circle, simply press and hold the Home button to activate the overlay, then use your finger to circle the element you want to search for. AI-powered search should identify what is circled and provide search results that are relevant to that subject.

It's a good thing that Google didn't pull its cutting-edge AI features away from older, more affordable devices, allowing more Pixel users to take advantage of Circle to Search without forcing them to upgrade.
