Both OpenAI and Google have turned to transcriptions of YouTube videos to further train their AI models, but this can infringe on creators' copyrights, the New York Times reports. According to the report, OpenAI used the speech recognition tool Whisper to transcribe over 1 million hours of YouTube videos. We then fed that transcript into GPT-4, a powerful AI system that runs ChatGPT's latest model of chatbot. Google, which owns YouTube, also transcribed YouTube videos to train its AI models.

Transcription of the video by both companies may infringe the creator's copyright in the video. Other uses of creator content to train AI have led to copyright and licensing lawsuits.

OpenAI's use of YouTube videos could also violate Google's rules, which prohibit the use of videos by “independent” applications or “automated means (e.g., robots, botnets, scrapers)” that access the videos. There is sex.
