Adnan was the daughter of a Greek mother and a Turkish father who were immigrants to Lebanon. Adnan had a diverse upbringing, as her family spoke Greek and Turkish, attended French school, and lived in a predominantly Arabic-speaking country.

At the age of 23, she moved to France to study philosophy and art at the University of Paris, then moved to the United States to continue her studies at the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University. She eventually returned to Lebanon, where she worked as a journalist and editor for Al Safa and L'Orient le Jour newspapers, where she helped develop sections dedicated to Lebanese and Middle Eastern culture.

Over time, Adnan delved deeper into the world of visual art, earning widespread acclaim for his vibrant abstract paintings inspired by the landscapes of California and Lebanon. Today, her art can be seen in museums and galleries around the world, from Paris to Beirut, Hong Kong to London.

As a writer, her novels and poetry explored themes of identity, memory, feminism, and human experience. These written works reflect the many identities and experiences she had, across languages, cultures, and continents. She is the author of several books, including Moonshots (1966), Sitt Marie Rose (1978), Paris, When Its Naked (1993), and Master of the Eclipse (2009), among others. I am writing a collection of poems.

Etel Adnans' contributions to the arts have earned her numerous awards and honors, including the 2013 Lambda Literary Award, the 2014 Francis Chevalier Arts and Letters Award, and the 2020 Griffin Poetry Award Lifetime Recognition.
