Spotify CEO announces deluxe edition with hi-fi audio coming soon

The Spotify HiFi story has had its twists and turns. First announced over three years ago, the music service's high-quality streaming tier has yet to materialize. Recent reports have suggested that lossless audio will be bundled as an add-on to Spotify's Premium subscription, alongside other perks (advanced library management, AI-powered playlists, headphone sound quality optimization, etc.). And today, during Spotify's earnings call, the company's CEO Daniel Ek confirmed that a service better than Premium is still in the works, but didn't offer a clear timeline for when it might be available.

In what is probably my favorite cliché tech industry phrase of all time, Ek said the effort is still in its early stages. (For those of you doing the math at home, it's been 1,247 days since Spotify first announced HiFi.) The plan here, Ek said, is to offer a much better version of Spotify. Think about $5 more than the current premium tier. So that would probably be in the $17 or $18 price range, but something like a deluxe version of Spotify, with all the benefits of the regular Spotify version but with more control, much higher quality in general, and other features I can't talk about yet.

That price is in line with Bloomberg's estimate that it would cost about $5 extra on top of Spotify's $11.99 per month fee. What Spotify's lossless audio ultimately looks like will be very different from what the company originally envisioned. All indications are that Spotify was caught off guard when Apple and Amazon started offering high-resolution audio as part of their standard subscription plans. The major music streaming companies always intended to sell it at a premium rate.

Those companies can be more aggressive with pricing because they have lots of other divisions to make up for losses. Spotify isn't as lucky, so it's had to rejig its plans and come up with add-on packages that are attractive to as many of the app's power users as possible. Finally, the timing seems right.

Ek said there is a significant portion of Spotify's 246 million subscribers who want a better version of the app — they are avid music lovers, and they're primarily looking for more flexibility in how they use Spotify and the music features it offers.

Bloomberg reported that Spotify plans to release the Deluxe edition (as Ek calls it) later this year, meaning after all this waiting, we're just a few more months away from finding out everything the add-on plan includes.
