Google announces Meet for Glass to promote hands-free collaboration from afar

The system integrates remote communications capabilities with Google’s wearable technology to enhance workers in a variety of industries.

In recent months, organizations around the world have moved to remote work to mitigate the COVID-19 epidemic. Some organizations have a short-term telecommuting policy, while others have a long-term commitment to remote work. Instead of traditional face-to-face interactions, virtual collaboration requires a number of solutions to improve the overall experience. To help remote teams, Google recently announced a new collaboration feature for wearable Glass Enterprise Edition 2.

In 2019, Google announced the latest version of Glass Enterprise Edition and the second edition of wearable devices. The unit touts three microphones, a 640×360 optical display, an 8 MP camera, speakers and more to assist hands-free remote operation. The combination of the company’s glasses and Google Meet allows remote workers to connect with other users in real time. The hands-free feature allows team members to interact from a distance while performing tasks.

In a press release, Google said it continued the “dog food tradition” with Meet for Glass and first tested the solution with employees in its data center. When someone joins Meet, Meet for Glass allows others to “see exactly what the data technician is doing” and collaborate in real time. This internal use case allowed the company’s data technicians to reach out to other employees, analyze their equipment, diagnose problems, and provide training to new employees.

Historically, Google has said that “working remotely means walking around the device with a bulky webcam or laptop,” but Google engineers used Glass to “hands.” You can now “focus on the task at hand for free”.

Google pointed out that data centers exist as a use case and elaborated on other industry-wide roles that could benefit from “head-up and hands-free solutions.” This includes realtors who offer “first-person virtual tours” and perform remote home inspections on behalf of homebuyers and potential tenants.

In addition, Google says field technicians “connect with remote experts” to repair devices, and manufacturers in increasing demand use onsite employees to “factory with the help of specialists around the world.” He explained that “equipment” can be evaluated and monitored.

Other organizations are leveraging wearable technology to help their employees and improve their work efficiency. Earlier this month, Lockheed Martin reported that it was using Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 and mixed reality to build NASA’s Orion spacecraft. According to Microsoft, using mixed reality holographic instructions during construction allowed employees to complete repetitive tasks such as manual measurements 90% faster.
