Google Duo will soon launch closed captioning: this is how it works

Google was previously found working on subtitles for its video calling app, Duo. This feature is currently being tested and a preview of it shows that subtitles are available for voicemail functionality on Duo.

Reverse engineering Jane Manchun Wong first revealed this feature in February of this year. XDA developers have now managed to get a glimpse of it and how it works on Duo. For the moment, closed captions are available only for voice messages and not for live video calls as you might expect. Google Duo allows users to record videos that can be sent as voice messages.

Once the video message has been saved to Duo, users will see a “CC” option at the top for closed captions. Users can press it to activate the function and closed captions for audio will appear on the video. XDA explains that subtitling is not very precise on Duo.

There is also a separate settings menu for closed captions that users can turn on / off. Along with this, users can also save these messages as videos, voicemails, photos and notes locally. Google does not delete these messages until they have been deleted by the user.

Google has not yet deployed this feature for Duo. It might be available first for Pixel users who already have captions available on their phones. Google recently made improvements to Duo, such as using artificial noise to improve voice calls on the app. Google uses this technology called WaveNetEQ which removes the audio jitter often heard during online calls, using artificial noise that mimics human speech.

Google Duo also rolled out support for 12 video call participants as the demand for video call apps increased with people around the world locked out.
