Pilbara earthquake: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Western Australia overnight, the Australian Geosciences Agency said

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Geoscience Australia said the earthquake occurred at 9.05pm WST on Saturday near the town of Marble Bar at a depth of 10km.

The quake was felt in Port Hedland and Karata, she added.

Several apparent aftershocks, with magnitudes of 2.6, 3.1 and 3.2, were recorded within two hours of the initial earthquake.

The tremors lasted 20 seconds, David Paddington, director of Last Chance Tavern, told The West Australian newspaper.

He said he saw “beer faucet lines swaying.”

“It was the biggest earthquake I’ve ever felt in my life,” he said, “so it was very reasonable.”

“All the liquor bottles in the back bar were swaying.

“It was pretty big, and it lasted for a while.”

The Australian Joint Tsunami Warning Center said there was no danger of a tsunami on the Australian mainland, islands or surrounding land from the quake.

This comes after Melbourne was rocked by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake at the end of September.

Aftershocks were felt in the following weeks.
