A series of strong earthquakes hit Tupelo, north of Halmahera

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A series of terrestrial and shallow earthquakes off North Halmahera, North Maluku hit this morning, January 10, with magnitudes 5.2 and 5.5 respectively.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, reported that the first earthquake occurred at 4:27 West Indonesia Time (WIB) or 6:27 local time and the second occurred 32 minutes later. The earthquake was felt up to the intensity of the Modified Mercalli Intensity VI (MMI) in Tupelo and many other areas, such as Sofifi and Galela.

In the 5.2-magnitude earthquake, the intensity of the shaking in western Halmahera was recorded as it is.

The epicenters of the first and second earthquakes were on Earth, four kilometers to the southwest and five kilometers to the northwest of North Halmahera. Their very depths are found 10 kilometers away.

Earthquakes also rocked on Saturday and Sunday north of Halmahera. In the Saturday afternoon earthquake, the BMKG registered a magnitude of 5,1 M with the strongest tremor felt by Tupelo, Jilloulo, Ternate, and Weda on the III MMI scale. In the early hours of Sunday’s 4.5-magnitude earthquake, the strongest MMI 3 earthquake was felt in Tupelo.
