An earthquake strikes near the coastal town of Veli, with experts reporting a magnitude of 2.2

A small earthquake was recorded off the coast of Yorkshire.

According to the British Geological Survey’s (BGS) seismology team, a 2.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 6.34pm on Sunday, January 9.

The earthquake was recorded 12 km southeast of the coastal town of Philly in North Yorkshire in the North Sea at a depth of 13 km.

No earthquake feeling reports were submitted to the British Geological Survey team and no additional information was provided.

The news of the reported earthquake also came as a surprise to the mayor of Philly, Cllr Jacqui Houlden-Banks.

“I didn’t know that was the case at all,” she said. “No one reported it or said anything about it.”

There was also a small earthquake reported 40 kilometers from Flamborough Head in the North Sea on Christmas Day.

Cllr Houlden-Banks said, “I think we’re fine as long as they’re out at sea. They can stay there!”

The BGS seismology team describes itself as the “UK’s national earthquake monitoring agency” which operates a network of sensors across the UK to monitor both British and overseas earthquakes, providing information to government, industry and the public.
