A 6.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Japan, and the government establishes the epicenter of the crisis

After a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the southwestern region of the country on Friday, Japan has formed a crisis response center under the supervision of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s advisory board, according to Japanese media.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the strong earthquake struck near the island of Kyushu at 16:08 GMT, with its epicenter 40 kilometers below sea level.

According to Kyodo news agency, earthquakes measuring five on the seven-point Japanese seismic intensity scale were recorded in Miyazaki and Oita prefectures, indicating vibrations severe enough to prevent walking.

The quake was also felt in western and central Japan, although it did not result in a tsunami, according to the agency.

So far, there has been no information about injuries or material damage.

The earthquake had no impact on the operations of Japan’s Kyushu Electric Power Corporation’s Genkai and Sendai nuclear power reactors, both located in Kyushu.

According to Japanese broadcaster NHK, no problems have been reported with the Ikata Nuclear Power Plant, which is located on the nearby island of Shikoku.

Agency officials said he was not afraid of a tsunami following the quake.
