Erik Garcetti interacts with the earthquake on live TV during the protest title

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti did not back down when, while a press conference was held on Wednesday about ongoing Black Lives Matter protests and the importance of testing for COVID-19, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook most of southern California.

Upon stopping his speech, Garcetti pointed out strangely, “I’ve just been told that we also have a major earthquake as if things can’t go wrong.” The earthquake felt throughout Riverside and Los Angeles counties, struck at around 6:30 pm, about 10 miles south of the Searles Valley in San Bernardino, at a depth of about 4.3 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake struck at a time when thousands of Los Angeles demonstrators were calling for an end to police and justice brutality by George Floyd, Bruna Taylor and Ahmed Arberry. Floyd died on May 25 in Minneapolis police custody after white officer Derek Chauvin was photographed kneeling on his neck for about nine minutes as the 46-year-old black man demanded that he could not breathe. Amidst justice demands, Chauvin was arrested and charged with second degree murder. The other three officers involved in the detention – Thomas Lane, c. Alexander Koenig and Tu Thao – they were all accused of aiding and abetting second degree murder.

Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman who had been awarded the EMT Awards, was shot eight times and killed by Louisville police at her home on March 13 after she entered her home shortly after midnight under a no-road warrant. No arrests were made in her case, although the FBI in Louisville announced on May 21 that it had opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Arberry, a 25-year-old black man, was killed on February 23 after being pursued while running by two white men, Gregory McMichael and his son Travis. Georgia’s FBI says that McMichaels shot Arbery, who was not armed after they saw him playing sports abroad. The two men were charged with murder and aggravated assault after a video of the confrontation was posted on social media last month.

Garcetti announced on Wednesday that it had canceled plans to increase the budget of the Los Angeles Police Department to $ 1.86 billion for the fiscal year 2020-2021 – an increase of about $ 122 million from last year. “We need a firm commitment to change, not only in words but in action,” he told a news conference. He added: “We need to make sure that black Americans see an end to the days of murders in broad daylight and that traffic simply stops because of the color of their skin.”
