Tahchabe – The year was 1952, and today was Monday, July 21. At 4:52 a.m., the second largest earthquake to hit California to date hit the sleepy town of Tehachapi, registering 7.7 on the Richter scale.

With extensive damage and 12 dead, 2,000 residents were cut off from outside help for several hours. They dug themselves and treated many of the wounded in the front lawn of the badly damaged Tehachapi small hospital. The current Tehachapi Boulevard corridor, then known as US Route 466 and spanning the length of the city, was destroyed, bringing down two railroad water reservoirs and shearing the walls of the multi-storey buildings and the Juanita Hotel.

As the 70th anniversary of that day approaches, the Tehachapi Museum, under the direction of Charles White, is documenting the earthquake in a video on display at the museum.

“The museum has been collecting material for years in the form of still photos, news footage and interviews from residents who lived here at the time,” White said. Los Angeles-based film company Trispect Films to produce a 10- to 12-minute documentary for display at the museum. We plan to premiere the video sometime in July and it may include a lecture series as well.”

Mills and his team researched the materials collected by the museum and wrote a script recounting the earthquake.

“In addition to interviewing local survivors of that fateful morning, we are incorporating several still images taken by residents that morning,” Mills said. “Archival news footage has been found. We will also recreate some dramatic scenes using the talents of local people as actors. This, with the addition of narration and music, will tell what happened on the morning of July 21 in Tehachapi 70 years ago.”

Filming took place in various locations in the city over two days this week.
