St. Louis area students head for help at the border between Poland and Ukraine

It takes an 18-hour flight to the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Chesterfield, Missouri – On the walls of Barratt Academy in Chesterfield are the following words: Build, Grow, Learn, Love, and Serve. Barat Academy founder Debbie Watson said service is a key mission of the school.

“Through service learning, we hope that students and all people will get the idea that we are here to make the world a better place,” she said.

Student Naomi Sankar took this assignment very seriously. On Sunday, Sancar departs for an 18-hour plane ride to the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Her mother and younger sister travel with her.

“Both of them are doing projects with the kids,” Sankar’s mother Vicki Hak said. “We bring craft supplies, and they made Google Slides presentations in Ukrainian for kids to understand the instructions.”

They have a lot to pack. Sankar takes 100 backpacks on the mission.

“These backpacks will contain things like notebooks, plush, and desk lamps,” Sankar said. “We’ll buy hygiene products, too.”

Sankar is the only student from Barat Academy who heads to the Polish-Ukrainian border, but the whole school sends their prayers and best wishes with her.

On Friday afternoon, the school held Sankar’s farewell and awarded her a religious sash and medal. During the farewell party, her fellow students presented her with an envelope of letters to refugee children.

Naomi and her family are scheduled to return later in May. They travel with Caritas International.
