South Carolina Cities and Counties Affected by Earthquakes

Lancaster, SC (WBTV) – So far, six earthquakes have hit near the Elgin region in total, including the initial 3.29 earthquake that started it all.

If six earthquakes in one area is not enough for a person, prepare to feel more. The 3.29-magnitude earthquake woke people up Monday night in Elgin, Kershaw County. The tremors were felt from the Georgia and South Carolina state line all the way to Rock Hill. The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management says it’s fairly normal for there to be more earthquakes and aftershocks, so the trip will be bumpy for the next few weeks.

“If we were asleep, I don’t think we felt anything,” says Mandy Powers Norell, who lives in Lancaster and felt the shivers.

While most people were tucked away in their beds, the Earth was awake.

“I heard a rattling. I felt a rumble. And I said Mitch, do you feel it?” she says.

What Mandy Powers Norell was feeling was an earthquake. The 3.29, with the epicenter 40 miles away. I had another 7.0+ earthquake in New Zealand back in 2016.

“I went online and it was like a party at 2 a.m. with everyone I knew. Everyone like that was an earthquake and could feel an earthquake,” she says.

The earthquake rocked social media with tweets and posts about the rumbling underground. People thought it was everything from the train to the thunder to the explosion. Even the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management got in on the fun as the second, third, fourth, and even fifth quake came and went.

“I assumed it was in Elgin. Because every time I hear about an earthquake in our area it is generally centered in the Elgin region.”

Norell’s powers were on the spot. The maps show that the earthquakes hit exactly that region, which is the epicenter of earthquakes in the past year.

“They can happen pretty much anywhere in South Carolina,” says Associate Professor of Geology Dr. Stephen Jaume of the College of Charleston.

He says it’s hard to see why so much is happening in Elgin. The area experienced 28 earthquakes in just five months.

Usually, there are no long-lived seismic swarms over about six months, which is rather rare. To my knowledge I don’t know anything in SC,” he says.

Powers Norell is interested in science, but more importantly, the feeling of living on Earth is moving beneath it.

“The Earth can open up and swallow me up if it wants to. This is comforting in many ways because it lets me know that as far as I’m concerned I don’t really have to worry because we don’t have control over anything,” says Powers Norell.
