Whitecaps trying to break out of the western vault in exchange for earthquakes | Sports

Vancouver Whitecaps coach Fanny Sartini told his players after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Toronto that they played “like a bunch of moms”.

Sartini, whose team host the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, meant it in a good way this Mother’s Day.

“Mothers care, mothers fight for their children, they are tough, and they have to be strong,” Sartini said.

Sartini hopes the Whitecaps (2-6-1, 7 points) will continue their maternal instincts as they try to escape the vault of the Western Conference.

Toussaint Ricketts scored the winning goal against Toronto in the 90th minute. He is the seventh different player to score for the White Caps this season, and no player has scored more than once.

Vancouver goalkeeper Thomas Hassall left the second half with a finger injury and Sartini said he would not play on Saturday, leaving the net to support Cody Cropper, who ended the scoring against Toronto.

Earthquakes (2-5-3, 9 points) will be looking for a four-game losing streak.

Jeremy Ibobisi scored five goals for San Jose and Cristian Espinosa scored four goals and four assists.

The Earthquakes beat visiting Colorado 1-0 last weekend with Nathan scoring in the 64th minute. It was San Jose’s second win in three MLS games since Alex Covelo replaced Matias Almeida as coach.

“I think the players have done a great job during the transition. It’s definitely not easy. We owe a lot to Matthias (Almeida) and his staff,” said Earthquakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski. “A lot of the way we push and the way we defend can be credited with teaching us over the past three and a half and four years.

“But, with (Alex) Covelo’s system, I think it’s a little bit more organized, a little bit more style, I would say. I think that’s a good indication of how we’re playing going forward.”
