The second earthquake near the city prompts a reminder to prepare

Southerners are reminded to prepare for natural disasters.

This claim comes after the second earthquake in Dunedin in just over a week.

GeoNet reported a 3.5-magnitude earthquake just outside Lee Steam, 30 kilometers west of Dunedin at 2.25 am yesterday.

More than 200 people have reported feeling shaken to GeoNet.

It follows a 3.8-magnitude earthquake around 1 a.m. outside Lee Stream last Tuesday.

Professor Mark Stirling, University of Otago’s chair of seismology, said people in Dunedin don’t think much about earthquakes, but there are a few fault lines that can create disasters on the scale of the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.

While there may be more shakes around Lee Stream soon, it doesn’t seem like an area with a lot of potential for a big event.

However, there were other fault lines near the city with this potential, such as the Akator and Tetri faults.

It was important for people to realize that Dunedin has seismic activity and to prepare accordingly.

Katie Jacobs, GNS seismology project scientist, said New Zealand has been a very active place tectonically.

Seismic clusters were common, the most dramatic example being aftershocks that followed large earthquakes.

They were caused in part by earthquakes that changed the condition of the surrounding area where they occurred.

A similar, but slightly smaller pair of earthquakes occurred in July 2020 near the same region as the last two earthquakes.

Throughout New Zealand’s broader area, there were 20 shallow earthquakes of 3.5 or greater in May and more than a thousand of magnitudes 1 or greater.

For an earthquake to be considered shallow, its depth would have to be less than about 40 kilometers, but the pair near Lee Stream were only 5 kilometers deep.

Since New Zealand has been very active, being outside the most dangerous areas does not mean there are no risks.

There has been a lot of work that has been done to try and predict earthquakes, but at the moment there is no way to know if a pair of earthquakes is a sign of more to come.

However, it did serve as a good reminder to prepare for disaster.

Ms. Jacobs said natural hazards cannot be prevented, but risks can and should be reduced by equipping your home

The National Emergency Management Agency recommends a three-day supply of water, long-lasting no-cook food, toilet paper, emergency toilet plastic buckets, work gloves, and a mask on hand in case of an emergency.
