Death toll from Ibra earthquake rises to 10

The death toll from a major earthquake that struck the northern Philippines rose to 10 on Friday after four more bodies were found under the rubble, the Philippine authorities said, while aftershocks continued to rock the mountainous region.

The regional civil defense office told AFP that rescuers in Luba town in the worst-hit Abra province had recovered the men’s remains on a section of the road buried by the landslide during the 7.0-magnitude quake.

Authorities said earlier that landslides and collapsed structures killed six others in Abra and neighboring governorates. More than 150 people were injured.

The powerful quake extended across the hilly region, damaging thousands of homes, destroying buildings and shaking tall towers hundreds of kilometers away in the capital, Manila.

The Social Welfare Department said military helicopters were transporting food aid and other emergency supplies to the area, where nearly 5,000 people remained in evacuation centers.

Workers’ crews responded to the aftershocks to remove the debris that had closed the main roads in the area.

The government’s earthquake office said Friday that more than 1,000 aftershocks have been recorded since the quake struck.

The Philippines is regularly rocked by earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.
