Great earthquake shakes Mexico on the anniversary of two previous earthquakes | Mexico

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck western Mexico on the anniversary of two devastating earthquakes earlier, killing at least one person and causing flooding on the Pacific coast.

The quake struck at 1.05 pm local time near the town of La Placita de Morelos, Michoacan state, at a depth of 15 km.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Twitter that the Secretary of the Navy told him that one person was killed in the coastal city of Manzanillo, Colima when a wall collapsed in a shopping mall.

Michoacan authorities said there were no immediate reports of major damage in that state other than cracks in buildings in the town of Colcumen.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued in Mexico City, but the city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said that so far there were no reports of damage in the capital.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there is a risk of tsunami waves near the coast, and footage posted on social media appears to show flooding in the city of Manzanillo.

The earthquake came exactly five years after an earthquake that killed 370 people and caused extensive damage in the center and south of the country. An earlier earthquake on the same day in 1985 killed about 5,000 people.

“It’s that date, there’s something about the 19th,” said Ernesto Lanzeta, a business owner in the capital’s Cuauhtemoc neighborhood. “The nineteenth is a day to be feared.”

The alerts for the new earthquake came less than an hour after simulating a nationwide earthquake on the occasion of the 1985 and 2017.

Electricity was cut off in parts of the central district of Rome, hundreds of kilometers northeast of the quake’s epicenter. Locals stood cuddling pets on the street, while tourists visiting a local market with a local guide were visibly confused and annoyed.

Traffic lights have stopped working, people are holding on to their phones, sending text messages or waiting for calls.

Humberto Garza stood outside a restaurant in Rome holding his three-year-old son. Like many who were hiking outside after the earthquake, Garza said the earthquake alarm sounded so soon after the annual simulation that he wasn’t sure it was real.

“I heard the alarm, but it sounded too far away,” he said.
