Cianjur earthquake victims may move into new homes before April 2023

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – Residents of Cugenang sub-district of Cianjur district in West Java who were affected by the earthquake of November 21, 2022 can be moved to their new homes before Eid al-Fitr or April 2023, said Cianjur District Chief Herman Suherman.

While housing construction continues, the county authority is awaiting data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on the names of the residents who will be relocated to the Cilaku subdistrict, Suhairman reported on Tuesday.

“We are still waiting for the repeated verification data that the Palestinian National Bank conducted on the residents who will move to the new homes,” added the district chief.

He said that at least 85 out of the 200 houses allocated to the residents of Koginang in the Chilako sub-district are ready to be handed over to the beneficiaries, while he hoped that the residents would soon move into their new homes.

Meanwhile, Shirman emphasized that the government is ready to provide assistance and disburse Rs 500,000 to Rs 500,000 (US$22.4-32) in cash support to non-productive residents once every three months for a year.

“Residents of production age will receive training to help them become new entrepreneurs in MSMEs, MSMEs, consistent with Cianjur Authority’s goal of creating thousands of new entrepreneurs,” he said.

He added that the government will also help residents who want to set up new businesses once they move into their new homes.

He informed the district chief that “the residents who are active in agriculture will receive a plot of land close to their new home, and thus they can resume work according to their experiences after moving.”

The Cianjur District Authority stated that the November 21 earthquake claimed 635 lives. Moreover, the 5.6-magnitude earthquake caused minor damage to 26,586 homes, moderate damage to 16,068 homes, and major damage to 13,633 homes.

The National Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) has urged the authority to relocate residents away from areas deemed vulnerable during earthquakes due to the proximity to the 9-kilometre Kujinang fault.
