The Netherlands plans to shut down Europe’s largest gas field in 2023: report

The Financial Times reported, citing government officials, that the Netherlands is seeking to shut down Europe’s largest gas field this year due to safety concerns.

The Financial Times quoted Minister of State for Mining Hans Felberev as saying that the Dutch government plans to close the earthquake-prone Groningen gas field by October 1, but will watch to see if there is a gas shortage in Europe after this winter. If necessary, Felbrief added, the work could continue until October 2024.

The report quoted Filbreev as saying that the gas field located in the northeastern region of the Netherlands, near the German border, produced only a small part of its energy. However, production continued as the government came under pressure to ramp up extraction last summer as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused major gas shortages in Europe, she said.

A parliamentary investigation is scheduled to confirm that previous governments covered up the fact that gas extraction was causing earthquakes and the results will be presented next month, according to the report.
