3 injured in a 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Yunnan, southwest China

KUNMING – Three people were injured in a 5.2-magnitude earthquake that shook Baoshan City, southwest China’s Yunnan Province, on Tuesday night.

Local authorities activated the third-level emergency response and rescue teams rushed to the disaster area.

The earthquake hit Longyang Baoshan District at 11:27 p.m. Tuesday. According to a local report, three of them sustained minor injuries in the earthquake and were taken to hospital for treatment. All of their injuries were non-life-threatening.

Zhang Yunyi, deputy mayor of Baoshan, said at a press conference Wednesday morning that the quake caused uneven damage to residential homes, water, electricity, traffic, communications and other infrastructure in and around the epicenter area.

More than 2,400 people have been sent to the disaster area for search and rescue operations. Zhang added that a total of 365 tents, 734 folding beds and 1,470 cotton quilts have been allocated to the affected areas.

Among the hardest hit are Wayao Township, Shuizhai Township and Banqiao Township, which are administered by Longyang County. Currently, 2,805 homes have been damaged in the three places, and more than 11,000 local residents have been moved to safer places.

The Baoshan earthquake relief headquarters will continue to track and monitor the disaster situation and identify potential geological disaster risks, while ensuring adequate access to electricity, communications and traffic in the affected areas to restore local work and production system as soon as possible.

The epicenter was monitored at 25.35 degrees north latitude and 99.28 degrees east longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. The provincial earthquake bureau said the epicenter is about 1,863 meters above sea level on average, about 29 km from downtown Baoshan.
