An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale was felt by some smartphones across Melbourne at around 11.40pm on Sunday.

The shock lasted about 15 seconds and included the shaking of walls and windows.

Twitter user JSTaR described the sensation as a “very loud, sudden jolt.”

“I felt that at Craigieburn. It was a sudden, very loud shock that shook the windows and doors. It felt like a bomb exploded or a plane crashed. No residual vibrations. It made us check out the house and the garage and scratch our heads. JSTaR tweeted.

It is expected to have caused minor damage, with no reports of major damage emerging after an hour.

Geoscience Australia reported a 3.8-magnitude earthquake near Sunbury, at an estimated depth of three kilometres.

SES Victoria, which later published its guide on how to stay safe in the event of an earthquake, was quick to acknowledge the shock in a tweet, “Yeah. We felt it too.”

She added: “In #earthquake (and any aftershocks) remember to ‘drop, cover and stop’. More info here.” The website link broke but was restored shortly after.

Understandably, #Earthquake was trending on Twitter late Sunday night after the tremors, with many Melburnians shocked by the experience.

Stormer Zoe tweeted: “I felt it at Kew!! I’ve never felt like this before.”

Among those who responded on Twitter, the movement was felt in Croydon, Chelsea and Camberwell, while reports of “house shaking in Rye” echoed across the metropolitan area.

The Andorian reported that she “smashed my drink out of my bed at Mentone.”

Paul Legos summed up the thoughts of many when he tweeted: “Melbourne felt #earthquake all over the CBD, everyone is awake!”

The quake was felt further afield, tweeted Twinsor: “Sunbury? Man the windows were shaking Fearntree Gully Road in the foothills of Dandenong!!”
