The earthquake-damaged Minami-Aso Railway has fully reopened for the first time in 7 years

The Minami-Aso Railway in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, has resumed full operations after seven years of partial hiatus following a series of strong earthquakes.

The railway connects Takamori Station in Takamori Township with Tateno Station in Minami-Aso Village. However, service has been suspended on about 60 percent of the line after it suffered severe damage in the 2016 tremors.

Early Saturday, a crowd of well-wishers and railway employees prayed for the safe operation of the train at a ceremony at Takamori Station. Then, at 6:00 am, the first train to Tatino station pulled out with the crowd waving from the platform.

Passengers were able to enjoy the scenic views of Mount Aso. They were particularly intrigued to see the view from the bridge, which was rebuilt after it was destroyed in the disaster.

The train arrived at Tatino station at the end of the line after a 30-minute journey.

The train’s driver, Teramoto Akihiro, said he feels proud and it is touching to see the railway being loved by so many people. He added that the day will remain in his heart for the rest of his life.
