The Nevada Seismological Laboratory monitors earthquake swarms in south Reno

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Nevada Seismic Laboratory is monitoring a cluster of earthquakes that have struck the south Reno area in the past few weeks.

The lab says they have identified and localized more than 270 small earthquakes, and the number is increasing in the last 30 days. The largest earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.5, occurred on January 28.

Earthquake swarms are groups of small to medium sized earthquakes.

Most of the quakes, which the lab called the South Reno Swarm, occurred 6.2 to 7.5 miles southeast of the Reno airport and at a depth of about 4 to 5 miles.

The swarm began primarily under the mountains east of the foothills of Virginia. However, in the past two days, the swarm has moved slightly to the southwest below the Virginia Foothills residential area, where the center says there are several faults that are not labeled but have been identified on a map.

NSL says it continues to monitor the area and locate earthquakes.
