Coronavirus Cases Updated in India, Aug 01: State Confirmed Confirmed Corona Cases, Death Numbers

Cases of Indian coronavirus: With blockade restrictions eased to a great extent and most activities resumed, the novel Coronavirus got almost unimpeded opportunities in July to spread to the Indian population. The result has been that more than 11 lakh people were found to have been infected with the virus in July. That’s almost double the number of people infected before that.

This means that, on average, more than 35,000 people were added every day in July to the confirmed number of infections in the country. In the last three days, that number has been more than 50,000, with each day recording a higher number than the day before.

Daily increase of cases in July

Andhra Pradesh saw its Coronavirus numbers increase by almost nine times in July, while in Karnataka the number of infected increased by more than seven times during this period. Bihar, Assam and Kerala more than quadrupled the number of infected they had by June.

In almost every state, the numbers have at least doubled, the only exceptions being Delhi and Gujarat. Delhi, which has shown a significant slowdown, saw its number rise by 55 per cent in July, while in Gujarat the number of infected rose by 89 per cent.

In addition to easing blocking restrictions, another important reason for the phenomenal increase in numbers has been the impressive increase in number of trials being realized. By the end of June, over 88 lakh tests had been conducted in the country. In July alone, more than 1.05 crust samples were tested. The number of daily tests has risen from a level of about two lakh at the end of June to over five lakh now. On Thursday, 6.42 lakh tests were performed in a single day, the highest so far. There are plans to further upgrade the testing infrastructure to enable over 10 lakh tests per day.

By the time the epidemic begins to subside, the higher the number of tests usually results in a greater number of people being found with the infection. This is because the current number of people infected with the disease is much higher than the number which is confirmed through testing. Since most of the infected do not show any symptoms of the disease, a large part of them are not detected. But if the number of tests is increased, many of these asymptomatic cases are also detected.

Increased testing helps in the long-term plan to improve the further spread of the disease. As more and more infected people are detected, they can be isolated and quarantined, thus reducing their chances of further transmitting the disease. In the short term, though, the numbers are likely to grow rapidly. This is what, many believe, seems to have happened in Delhi. As the tests increased, the number of infected increased significantly, but then, after a few weeks, there was a very noticeable decrease in new findings.

The same strategy has not yielded equally visible results in some other states, such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh, at least not yet. These states have been witnessing an increase for more than a month now. And yet, as Andhra Pradesh has insisted, increased testing is the only strategy that can bring effective results, without the pain associated with blockage. Andhra Pradesh, the fastest growing state in India for more than two weeks, has decided to impose blocking restrictions, and has instead focused on further increasing its testing capacity. The state has already tested more samples than any other state banning Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

With more than 57,000 new cases detected on Friday, the number of people infected with the virus so far has gone to over 16.95 lakh. Nearly 11 lakh people have already recovered from the disease, while over 36,500 have died.
