The mayor of Pune claims 400 unaccounted for COVID-19 suspected deaths
Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol has claimed that at least 400 suspected COVID-19 deaths went unaccounted for in the city in July.
Mr Mohol said he raised the issue during his meeting with Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday, when the latter was in town to take up the coronavirus situation.
Speaking Friday, the mayor said there are at least 400 to 500 deaths each month of suspected coronavirus patients passing unaccounted for at Sassoon General Hospital and private hospitals in the city.
There are at least 12 deaths of suspected coronavirus patients going to Sassoon Hospital every day without counting. Similar cases are occurring in private hospitals, he claimed.
These deaths remain unaccounted for because patients are either brought dead to hospitals or they die immediately after being brought there, he said.
According to the instructions, no test is done on a deceased. But when doctors get X-rays of these people, they show symptoms of COVID-19, claimed Mr. Mohol.
He said that while raising the issue with the CM, he demanded steps to stop such deaths.
Early tracing of patients should be done so that they are given timely treatment and such deaths are stopped, he added.
Following the allegations, Maritime Church Collector Ram said an investigation would be conducted into him and a report was sought from Sassoon Hospital.
District administration staff continue to visit Sassoon Hospital and go through the minutes. There is unlikely to be any misreporting or under-reporting in Pune, he said.
