Live Updates: A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shakes New York City and beyond

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook buildings across the New York City area at 10:23 a.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was in Lebanon, New Jersey, about 50 miles west of Manhattan. The shaking was reportedly felt in cities from Philadelphia to Boston.

Several East Coast airports issued ground stops to halt air traffic in the immediate aftermath. The quake shook buildings in Manhattan and across the city, sending residents out into the street wondering what had just happened.

The New York Police Department said it had no immediate reports of damage, but sirens were heard throughout the city. Several minutes later, smartphone alerts sounded, advising residents, who were probably unaccustomed to such emergencies, to stay indoors.

Fabian Levy, spokesman for the city's mayor, Eric Adams, said in a post on social media that the city's mayor had been informed of the earthquake.

“Although we do not have any reports of significant impacts at this time, we are still assessing the impact,” Mr Levy wrote.

While most earthquakes in the Northeast go undetected, New Yorkers have felt several over the years.

A 2.2-magnitude earthquake shook parts of New York and New Jersey in May last year, and a 3.6-magnitude earthquake shook the city of Adams Center in New York the month before that. In 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Virginia led to the evacuation of office buildings in City Hall and Midtown in Manhattan.

Pratt said the most significant earthquakes recorded in New York City occurred in 1884, when a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck from beneath Coney Island.
