Taiwan approves $878 million for relief after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake

This was the most dangerous earthquake to hit Taiwan since a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in 1999.

The Taiwan government agreed Thursday to provide about $878 million for earthquake relief after a strong earthquake occurred last month that killed at least 17 people and damaged buildings and infrastructure.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the island on April 3 also injured more than 1,100 people, but strict building codes and widespread disaster preparedness helped avert a larger disaster.

The quake caused massive landslides that closed tunnels and damaged roads and buildings, dealing a blow to tourism and business in the eastern city of Hualien, which is close to the epicenter.

The Cabinet announced on Thursday that it would make “maximum efforts” to rebuild homes and revitalize businesses, through the NT$28.55 billion (US$878 million) “0403 Earthquake Recovery and Reconstruction” plan.

Under the project, NT$18.44 billion will be allocated for emergency repair and reconstruction of public facilities, while NT$5.84 billion will be allocated for the resettlement and reconstruction of private homes damaged by the earthquake.

Another NT$4.08 billion will fund industrial revitalization, while NT$190 million will be allocated “for other insurance subsidies and employment assistance programs,” the Cabinet said.

“In the future, the central and local governments will work together… to ensure that people receive the fastest, most appropriate and timely assistance,” the Cabinet said in a statement.

The earthquake came weeks before Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-ti, took office on May 20 after winning the presidential elections that took place in January.

This was the most dangerous earthquake to hit Taiwan since a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in 1999.

About 2,400 people died in this earthquake, making it the deadliest natural disaster in the island's history.
