Earthquakes continue to hit Box Elder County on Monday

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Northern Utah continues to shake as two more small earthquakes hit Box Elder County near Tremonton this morning.

The first quake occurred on Monday, May 6 just before 6:30 a.m., and the last shook the morning road around 7:15 a.m. According to the University of Utah Seismic Stations (UUSS), the two quakes registered magnitudes of 2.0 and 1.9 on the Richter scale, respectively.

As of 9 a.m., no one had reported feeling the two earthquakes.

Both of Monday morning's tremors are aftershocks of larger earthquakes that struck the area over the weekend. The first was a magnitude 3.9 and woke up northern Utah around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Nearly 120 people reported feeling this earthquake.

Just one day later, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook northern Utah around 5:30 Sunday evening. Nearly 400 people reported feeling the larger quake, although no damage was reported.

Earthquakes in the area north of the Great Salt Lake are not uncommon. In February 2023, residents of Box Elder County received a rude awakening due to a 3.2 magnitude earthquake outside Brigham City. This rumbling joined another series of earthquakes that shook the area near Logan and Hyde Park a month ago.

According to Michigan Tech University, there are millions of small earthquakes like the one that hit Box Elder County Monday morning. These earthquakes—magnitude 2.5 or less—are usually not felt but can still be picked up by a seismograph.

Strong earthquakes, such as the 4.4 and 3.9 magnitude quakes over the weekend, occur less frequently, according to MTU. There are only an estimated 500,000 each year that range in magnitude from 2.5 to 5.4. MTU says these earthquakes are “often felt” and can cause some minor damage.
