The Northeast is shaken when earthquakes hit New York, New Jersey, and New Hampshire

The past seven days have been busy in the Northeast, seismically speaking, with more than 1,000 people reporting to the USGS that they felt shaking from one of three earthquakes that struck the region. Although it was noticeable, they were all too weak to cause any damage or injuries.
According to the USGS, earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or less are rarely felt by people, but once they exceed 2.0, as happened in this event, they can be felt by more and more people. While damage is possible when events of magnitude 3.0 or greater occur, significant damage and injury typically do not occur until the magnitude of the seismic event rises to an event estimated at magnitude 5.5 or greater.
The first and weakest of the past seven days was 1.6 magnitude and struck west-southwest of Chesterfield in southwestern New Hampshire on the morning of May 18. The second and second strongest group struck on May 21 near Elizabethtown in upstate New York. ; This earthquake was measured at 2.1 magnitude. The last earthquake of the three was also the strongest; A 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Gladstone, New Jersey, generating more than 900 reports alone to the USGS of strong shaking there.
The New Jersey earthquake was an aftershock of a powerful tremor that struck the region in early April. The 4.8 magnitude New Jersey earthquake sequence began on Friday, April 5, and was followed by more than 100 aftershocks, including some fairly moderate aftershocks. According to the USGS, a magnitude 3.7 event occurred near Bedminster shortly before 6 p.m. on April 5, along with 10 other earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or greater.
Earthquakes in New York and New Hampshire have been minor and occur from time to time in the area.
According to the Northeastern States Emergency Consortium (NESEC), New York is a state with a very long history of earthquake activity that has touched all parts of the state. Since the first recorded earthquake on December 19, 1737, New York has experienced more than 550 earthquakes centered within its state borders through 2016. It has also experienced strong ground shaking from earthquakes centered in nearby US states and Canadian provinces. Most of the earthquakes in New York occurred in the greater New York City area, in the Adirondack Mountains, and in the western part of the state.

While many of the earthquakes that have struck New York are as weak as the May 21 event, some have been devastating. Of the 551 earthquakes recorded between 1737 and 2016, 5 were considered “destructive”: 1737, 1929, 1944, 1983, and 2002.
While most New York earthquakes have been upstate, New York City has also seen devastating earthquakes over the years. At approximately 10:30 pm on December 18, 1737, an unknown earthquake with an epicenter of magnitude 5.2 struck New York City. The earthquake damaged some chimneys in the city. On August 10, 1884, another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck; This earthquake caused chimneys and plaster to crack, windows were shattered, and items were thrown off shelves all over not only New York City, but also surrounding cities in New York and New Jersey. The shaking from the 1884 earthquake was felt as far west as Toledo, Ohio, and as far east as Penobscot Bay, Maine. Some in Baltimore, Maryland also reported feeling it.
While the West Coast of the United States is known for earthquakes, the risk of earthquakes is high elsewhere in the country. Image: USGS
