Japan quake: Thousands still sheltering as Monday marks six months since New Year's Day quake

Monday marks six months since a major earthquake devastated the Noto Peninsula and nearby areas in central Japan. It left 281 people dead in Ishikawa Prefecture. Three others are still missing. Problems, including fatigue and psychological stress, weigh heavily on survivors.

As of Tuesday, nearly 2,300 people were staying in evacuation shelters in Ishikawa Prefecture.

About 50 of them have taken refuge in the Lifelong Learning Center in Suzhou City over the past six months. Until April, evacuees were unable to get water at the center because the earthquake cut off service, but shower facilities and air conditioning were finally installed last month.

“Time passed very quickly. We worked hard to get back to normal,” said Hashimoto Toyomi, in charge of the evacuation center.

A number of schools in the governorate are still closed due to being destroyed or used as shelters.

This means that many students have had to move to another school and adapt to a new environment amid the difficulties caused by the disaster. Six primary schools are holding classes together in vacant classrooms in one of the few schools open.

“At first, I was nervous about attending classes with students from other areas. But gradually I got used to it. I am happy that I was able to make friends with them,” said a sixth-grade student.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake caused damage to more than 84,500 homes in Ishikawa Prefecture. About 10% of them – or about 8,070 homes – were completely destroyed.

A seven-story building and several other buildings in Wajima City still collapsed on June 26.

Ishikawa Prefectural officials offered prayers for the victims on Monday.

Ishikawa Governor Hase Hiroshi stressed that the prefecture remains in a “state of emergency.”

Senior officials observed a minute of silence on Monday morning.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio attended the inaugural meeting of the Ishikawa Prefecture Inter-Ministerial Government Task Force.

Kishida promised full support for the restoration efforts. “We all have to work closely as a team to move forward with the reconstruction of this area,” he said.

The task force of 150 officials will be based in the prefecture. They will focus on clearing debris, restoring water and rebuilding the Asaichi Street shopping district in Wajima City, which was badly damaged by a fire sparked by the quake.
