3.9 magnitude earthquake hits parts of western Montana

Fireworks weren't the only thing rattling windows in western Montana as the state celebrated the Fourth of July.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck near Seeley Lake at 4:46 a.m. Friday. The quake was located 23 miles east of Seeley Lake, northeast of it and 48 miles from Missoula.

Although you might not think of Montana as the earthquake capital of the United States, earthquakes happen here in the Big Sky region more than you might think. According to Ready Gallatin, Montana experiences an average of 7 to 10 earthquakes per day, making it the fourth most seismic state in the country.

The most famous earthquake to occur in the state was in August 1959. The quake, which occurred near West Yellowstone, killed 28 people and caused a massive rockslide of more than 80 million tons of rock.

The collapse of the rocks would block the Madison River and form what is now known as Earthquake Lake.

Ready.Gov suggests the following tips in the event of an earthquake:

If you are in a car, stop. Set the parking brake. If you are in bed, lie on your back and cover your head and neck with a pillow. If you are outside, stay outside and away from buildings. If you are inside, stay and do not run outside and avoid doors. Copyright: Canva Copyright: Canva

They also remind you that aftershocks are a common occurrence and you should prepare using the “drop, cover and hold on” method.
