Did you feel it? 4.5 magnitude earthquake shakes southern Utah – St. George News

ST. GEORGE – Some area residents may have felt ground shaking Sunday night when an earthquake struck southern Utah.

The quake, which struck 15 miles from Brian Head and at a depth of 12.2 miles, was felt in four states, according to information released by the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was recorded at 11:29 p.m. and was reported as a 4.5 magnitude quake. A 4.0 magnitude quake can cause moderate damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to the “Did you feel the earthquake?” page on the USGS website, it was felt as far north as Idaho Falls, Idaho. The quake's range extended south to north of Las Vegas, Nevada, and residents of Page, Arizona, reported feeling seismic activity.

The St. George News also received emails from St. George and Washington City residents who reported feeling the quake.

The USGS says Sunday night’s quake was part of a series of smaller earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 2.0 to 3.5 in the area. These varying magnitudes were recorded at several locations within the affected area, providing a comprehensive picture of the quake’s wide-ranging effects. Data from these reports helps map the extent of seismic activity and understand the distribution of tremors felt across multiple states.

This quake comes after a 3.1-magnitude quake in Iron County on June 16, the St. George News reported, and a 2.9-magnitude quake that struck about 6 miles northwest of Enoch on June 9.

According to the University of Utah, the state experiences about 1,500 earthquakes a year, including aftershocks. Of those, about 13 have an average magnitude of 3.0 or higher. About 2 percent of earthquakes are noticeable to people in the area.
