Google on Tuesday announced it’s expanding its earthquake alert system on Android to all 50 US states and six US territories. The safety feature will send you a notification seconds before you feel the tremors that come with major seismic activity. Those extra seconds can mean the difference between life and death, as the alerts are supposed to give you enough time to take cover and wait for the quake to stop.

The good news about the new Android feature, which is already available in 97 other countries, is that you don't need to do anything to activate it.

Android's earthquake alert system is relatively simple. It uses your phone's accelerometer to detect the vibrations characteristic of earthquakes. If your phone detects an earthquake, it will automatically send two warning alerts to your phone.

A “Beware” alert will tell you that there may be mild or weak shaking in your area. Pay attention to these warnings, because something more serious could happen next.

The “Take Action” alert is the most important alert. It tells you that moderate to severe shaking is expected where you are. You’ll receive an alert to take cover and protect yourself while you wait for the earthquake to pass. The second alert will provide you with a button that lets you access tips on what to do after an earthquake.

As of Tuesday, Google Earthquake Alerts on Android were available in California, Oregon and Washington. In 2020, Google partnered with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) and ShakeAlert to deliver these notifications to the three states.

Notifications in these areas rely on traditional seismometers to detect earthquakes. This is understandable, since these areas of the United States are the most earthquake-prone.

Tuesday’s announcement includes Android phones and their accelerometers. The devices will be used to detect shaking in all other states where the USGS’s ShakeAlert system isn’t available.

Google says it has worked “with renowned seismologists like Dr. Lucy Jones, dedicated academic researchers like Dr. Janet Sutton, and disaster response organizations like the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC) to inform and improve earthquake alerts on Android.” Here’s Dr. Jones’ comment on the new Android feature:

You don’t need to do anything to turn on the new security alert on your Android phone. Google will roll it out to all Android users in the US in the coming weeks.
