According to the county engineers, the bridge will collapse in an earthquake of magnitude 8 or greater.

“Geologists tell us it’s about when this will happen, not if it’s going to happen,” said Mike Pullen, a spokesman for Multnomah County. “None of the downtown bridges will be usable for weeks or months, and in the case of a 94-year-old bridge like this one, we will have to completely rebuild it.”

The computer simulation shows what the county engineers believed a major earthquake would do on the Burnside Bridge.

First it will collapse on Naito Parkway and Waterfront Park.

Intense vibration will break the bridge apart causing entire sections to collide in the river.

All slopes leading to the bridge will collapse.

The county is exploring four different options for fortifying the bridge and asking the public to participate.

So far 85% say they want the county to build a new, long-term bridge worth $ 825 million, which is in fact the least expensive option.

The biggest complaint? It can partially block the iconic landscape of Portland, Oregon.

“From a traffic lane, that would definitely change your view of it,” Pauline said.

The county also wants to know what the public thinks should happen to traffic while building the bridge. Should the county build a temporary bridge, or should the bridge shut down completely and divert traffic instead to other city-center bridges?

The temporary bridge, similar to the one laid during construction of the Sellwood Bridge, would create two lanes of traffic, but would also cost $ 90 million to build.
