Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has implemented a national blockade in an attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus.

The restrictions came into effect at midnight local time (6:30 pm GMT) and will run for 21 days.

“There will be a ban on leaving your home,” Modi said in a television address.

He urged people not to panic, but the crowds quickly moved to stores in the capital, Delhi and other cities.

According to correspondents, it is unclear how, or now, people will be allowed to buy food and many other essential things.
