A witness described the scene as a truck driving into the crowd at Promenade des Anglais.

Driver Nadar El Shafei initially believed that he had lost control of the vehicle and hit the pedestrian by accident.

“I was yelling at him and yelling for him to stop,” said 5-straight Clare McDonnell.

“He looked like a cellphone and I thought he was calling an ambulance … but he started shooting from the window.”

At least 84 people have died, including children, following a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the city of Nice in southern France.

The driver drove 2km (1.2 miles) from Promenade des Anglais around 11pm before being shot by police.
