Pope Francis offered condolences and prayers on December 30 to the victims of the earthquake that shook central Croatia.

“I express my closeness to the injured and those affected by the earthquake, and I call in particular to those who lost their lives and for the sake of their families,” the Pope said before concluding his weekly public meeting.

Reuters reported that the 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck on December 29 and caused widespread damage. The earthquake destroyed at least two villages about 30 miles from the Croatian capital, Zagreb.

The strong earthquake that Austria felt so far was the second to hit the country in two days. A 5.2 magnitude earthquake jolted central Croatia on December 28.
