Kingstown, Saint Vincent – The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) says the high volcanic tectonic earthquakes that began Tuesday at La Soufriere have stopped.

The earthquakes stopped on Friday, NEMO said, “since then, the only seismic activity that has been recorded has been the small, low-frequency events associated with the growth of the dome.”

According to NEMO, these types of events were prevalent prior to Tuesday.

“The rate of their occurrence does not seem to have changed due to the volcanic tectonic earthquake swarm.”

Last week, NEMO Director Michelle Forbes said that people near the volcano should be prepared to evacuate in no time.

“We’ve been saying since the last few months that we have to be prepared for any sudden change, any quick change,” said Forbes, who was a guest on a local show.

Geoscientist Richard Robertson, who heads the volcano monitoring team, echoed Furby’s comments, saying the country was lucky this time, in that, unlike in 1979, when the volcano last erupted, the current eruption suddenly began.
