Coronavirus: US unemployment claims hit 26.4 million viruses – BBC News

Another 4.4 million Americans sought unemployment benefits as the economic toll caused by the coronavirus pandemic rose last week.

The new applications raised unemployment claims from mid-March to € 26.4 million.

That’s more than 15% of U.S. workers.

However, the latest data said the number of new claims fell in the third week, sparking hopes of ending the worst of the shock.

“While 4.4 million unemployed claims are staggering this week, the pace of layoffs has peaked,” said Richard Flynn, UK financial services firm Charles Schwabe.

“The important questions at this point are when can the economy open up and what happens?”
