Australian PM Expands Leader as Country’s Most Favorite Leader, Poll Shows

SYDNEY Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has extended his term as the country’s most beloved leader, a poll showed Monday, bolstered by his government’s coronavirus wage subsidy scheme and efforts to improve the spread of the pandemic.

A Newspaper conducted for the Australian Newspaper showed that Morrison enjoyed the best rating for an opposition leader in more than five years.

Morrison’s popularity plummeted over his treatment of shrub fires late last year, but he has improved his stance with his response to the pandemic as the country struggles with a new wave of infections in the state of Victoria.

Morrison showed his Conservative government’s disregard for deficits to commit spending worth about $ 100 billion ($ 71.50 billion) to employers to retain staff they might otherwise have laid off.

The government last week eased rules to qualify for its payroll subsidy scheme, as an outbreak of infections in Victoria forced large parts of the economy to close.

With just over 21,400 infections and 314 deaths from the virus, Australia has achieved more than many other developed countries, aided by severe blockades that are expected to increase unemployment by up to 10%.

The Bank of Australia cut its outlook for the national economy on Friday and warned that unemployment would remain high for several years.

Morrison approval ratings remained high at 68% against a two-point increase among those unhappy with his performance, the poll showed.

The poll was based on polls of about 1,500 voters in the capital Canberra and other regions from Wednesday to Saturday.
